India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's fourth T20 century and Sarfaraz Khan's blazing fifty led Mumbai to a five-wicket win against Haryana in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 Super League clash on December 14. In the run chase of 235 at DY Patil Academy, Pune, Mumbai dominated the proceedings. They achieved the target with 15 balls to spare.
Haryana post big total
Mumbai skipper Shardul Thakur won the toss and opted to bowl first. Haryana skipper Ankit Kumar got his side off to a blazing start while Arsh Ranga played second fiddle. Sairaj Patil got the breakthrough in the seventh over with Ranga falling for a 23-ball 26. Ankit and Nishant Sindhu went on to share a 110-run partnership. Patil returned to dismiss Ankit in the 15th over. The opener hit 10 fours and six sixes in his 42-ball 89.
In the slog overs, Samant Jakhar hit three sixes in his 14-ball 31. He was retired out. Sumit Kumar hit four consecutive fours to help Haryana post 234/3. Sindhu remained unbeaten for 63 off 38 balls. he hit four fours and three sixes.
Jaiswal, Sarfaraz star in Mumbai's run chase
In the run chase, Jaiswal and Ajinkya Rahane shared a 19-ball 53-run opening partnership. Rahane scored 21 runs from 10 deliveries, including two fours and a six. Ishant Bhardwaj got Rahane’s wicket in the fourth over. Sarfaraz wreaked havoc as he raced to his half-century from just 18 balls, sending a message to the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises ahead of the mini-auction. Their partnership lasted 88 runs. Amit Rana got the breakthrough. Sarfaraz hit nine fours and three sixes in his 25-ball 64.
Jaiswal continued to march on while wickets fell at the other end. Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Suryansh Shedge and skipper Thakur fell cheaply. In the 17th over, Jaiswal reached his century from 48 balls. The opener took his team to the doorstep of victory. He was dismissed on the first ball of the 18th over by Samant Jakhar. The opener hit 16 fours and a six in his 50-ball 101. Atharva Ankolekar ensured there is no anti-climax and finished the match with a four and a six.
Mumbai’s run chase of 235 is the second-highest run chase in SMAT history. The top spot belongs to Jharkhand. They chased down 236 with six wickets in hand at the same venue against Punjab on December 12.
Jaiswal makes a statement
Ignored from T20I squad, Jaiswal has faced snub from selectors from T20I squad. After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson got the opening spot. Then, Samson was demoted down the order to make way for Shubman Gill who is yet to score a fifty in the format since he was made vice-captain in T20 Asia Cup 2025.
