Five-time World Champions Australia are locking horns with Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley stadium in New Delhi on October 25, Wednesday.

The match began with the Australians winning the toss and choosing to bat first. However, it wasn’t just their gameplay that drew attention. The Pat Cummins-led Aussie team donned black armbands, sparking curiosity among spectators and fans alike. Speculations were put to rest as Cricket Australia soon disclosed the touching reason behind this gesture.

In an official statement, Cricket Australia confirmed that the team wore the black armbands as a mark of respect and tribute to the Australian cricketer Fawad Ahmed and his family. The cricketing world was saddened to learn that Fawad Ahmed recently suffered the devastating loss of his four-month-old son. Born in June 2023, the child had been grappling with health issues and had been under medical care in a Melbourne hospital. 

 

 

After suffering back-to-back defeats Australia bounced back to win the next two to sit at the fourth spot in the points table. With heart-wrenching losses against India and South Africa, the Aussies showcased their champion spirit by make a resounding comeback with dominating performances against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. As they step onto the Delhi turf, they are fervently hoping to clinch another victory, solidifying their position.

 

 

Meanwhile, after winning the toss against Netherlands, Pat Cummins confirmed the absence of Marcus Stoinis after he suffered a niggle, "We will have a bat. Looks like a lovely wicket. The sun is out. Happy with the way we have played the last couple of games. The bridge is still too far for Head. Still would need a few more days. Stoinis has a niggly calf. Cam Green comes in. Looks a good day to score runs."

 

Australia lost Mitchell Marsh (9) and Steve Smith (71) within 24 overs which left their scoreboard reeling at 160/2. But soon David Warner and Labuschange steadies Australia's boat. As of 31.3 overs, Australia are 201/2 with David Warner (89) and Labuschangne (27) intact on the crease.
