Former India captain and selector, Kris Srikkanth has weighed in on the burgeoning career of the young talent Tilak Varma. While the inclusion of the southpaw in India's 17-man squad for the World Cup has turned many heads, Srikkanth has advised the management to play the long game with Varma, suggesting he be primed for the next ICC tournament instead.
Sharing his perspective on his YouTube channel, the seasoned cricketing personality opined against rushing Tilak into the World Cup scene. Srikkanth's argument rests on letting the young talent gather more experience through participating in multiple ODI series before the grand stage of a World Cup. Recognizing Tilak's undeniable potential, Srikkanth emphasized the need to groom him with an eye on the next World Cup, ensuring that when the time is right, he is more than prepared to shine.
"Tilak Varma, the point that I'm making was also conveyed by Ganguly. Don't give him a debut in a big tournament. First, let him play a few ODI series. Ganguly also had the same point of view," Srikkanth said.
"Tilak Varma has fantastic potential. Tilak Varma is a brilliant player. But don't let him be in the playing lineup for the World Cup. Let him play in a few ODI series and then the upcoming T20 World Cup and groom him till the next ODI World Cup. There is something called grooming a youngster," he added.
Tilak, a shining beacon for the Mumbai Indians, is yet to mark his debut in One Day Internationals (ODI). However, the dynamic batter didn't take long to showcase his mettle on the international stage. Making his first appearance during India's tour of the West Indies in August, he immediately made waves.
Displaying poise and maturity beyond his years, Tilak was particularly impressive during the T20I series against the West Indies. Scoring a commendable 173 runs in just five matches, he boasted an average of 57.66 and a strike rate hovering around 139. His performances weren't just about numbers; they were a testament to his grit, underscored by a vital half-century that highlighted his prowess under pressure.
The cricketing fraternity has been abuzz with praises for the young batter. Calls for his place in the Asia Cup squad have grown louder, with many advocating for his participation in the imminent World Cup. Srikkanth, however, advocates a more cautious approach.
