The decision was made by Javagal Srinath, a distinguished member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. After determining the match's progression and taking time allowances into account, it was ascertained that Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka lagged by two overs from the expected rate.
The imposed fine aligns with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. As per the said article, for every over not bowled within the designated timeframe, players face a 5 percent match fee fine.

Acknowledging the lapse, team captain Dasun Shanaka accepted the penalty, making a formal hearing redundant. The charge was initiated by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Shahid Saikat and received backing from third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Alex Wharf.
The match itself was brimming with action and record-breaking feats. Spectators at the Arun Jaitley Stadium were treated to a cricketing masterclass as South Africa's top-order batsmen showcased their prowess, driving their team to a staggering 428/5. Among the centurions, Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen played notable knocks. Yet, it was Aiden Markram who became the focal point with his staggering 106 runs off 54 balls, making it the fastest century in men's ODI World Cup history. This stunning achievement saw Markram surpass the previous record set by Ireland's Kevin O'Brien in the 2011 World Cup.
Despite the overwhelming total set by South Africa, the former champions Sri Lanka put forth a spirited chase. Key performances came from Kusal Mendis, who made a sturdy 76, Charith Asalanka with a commendable 79, and captain Dasun Shanaka contributing 68 runs. Nevertheless, the South African bowlers proved formidable, bundling out the Lankan side for 326 in 44.5 overs.
The result – a resounding 102-run victory for South Africa and a wake-up call for Sri Lanka as the tournament progresses.
