Shakib's retirement roadmap involves a gradual exit from the different formats of international cricket.

In the world of cricket, few names shine as brightly as Shakib Al Hasan's. The veteran cricketer, renowned for his exceptional all-round skills, has announced his retirement plans from international cricket. Shakib, often regarded as one of the greatest all-format all-rounders, shared his intentions in an exclusive interview with T-Sports. Here's a detailed look at his retirement strategy and the future of his captaincy.

Retirement on the Horizon

Shakib's retirement roadmap involves a gradual exit from the different formats of international cricket. As per his current plans, he intends to bid farewell to the ODI format after the 2023 Champions Trophy. For T20 cricket, fans can expect to see him in action until the 2024 World Cup, slated to be held in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA). However, Shakib hinted at the possibility of retiring from all three formats simultaneously, with the exact timeline still uncertain.

In his own words, Shakib explained, "May be I will retire from three formats at the same time, and no one can tell about the future, but at this moment, I have such an idea." While his future decisions remain fluid, this announcement marks a significant point in his illustrious career.

Captaincy Exit

Shakib's leadership journey has also been a focal point in recent times. Earlier this year, he returned as Bangladesh's ODI captain after Tamim Iqbal stepped down from the position ahead of the Asia Cup. Shakib clarified that he took on the role at the request of BCB chief Najmul Hasan Papon. However, he made it clear that his stint as the skipper of the Tigers' ODI squad will conclude after the upcoming World Cup.

"As far as reality goes, I will lead till this World Cup and I won't lead in ODIs after that," Shakib affirmed. His resignation as captain in September was motivated by the team's needs rather than personal aspirations. The decision was a response to the call of duty, ensuring the best interests of the team.

World Cup Showdown

Bangladesh's cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the World Cup, set to commence on Saturday, October 7. The team will face Afghanistan in their opening match at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala. Shakib's captaincy in this tournament adds a layer of significance to the event.

As the cricketing world watches his every move, Shakib Al Hasan remains a key figure in Bangladesh's cricketing landscape. While his retirement plans suggest a transition, his dedication and contributions to the sport will continue to inspire generations of cricketers.
