Renowned Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has not only voiced his concerns over the umpiring decisions in the recent Pakistan vs South Africa ICC World Cup 2023 match but also took issue with Nasser Hussain's defence of the Decision Review System (DRS).
The controversy ignited when the third umpire retained the on-field decision, even after Pakistan invoked the DRS against Tabraiz Shamsi. Despite the technology suggesting a potential wicket, the verdict stood firm.

This decision had significant match implications, as Shamsi, in partnership with Keshav Maharaj, added pivotal runs, swinging the game in favour of South Africa.
Many cricket enthusiasts disagreed with Harbhajan's viewpoint, and a fan presented a video where Nasser Hussain explained the DRS. However, Harbhajan was quick to dismiss it, stating, "Paid to speak for tech to show tech is right. he is suggesting tech is right @imVkohli isn’t. Coz tech must have paid the broadcaster to show how important is tech.. Ok if the tech is right go with tech y do u need umpires to stick to their own decisions? Utterly nonsense…"
Harbhajan's original tweet expressed, “Bad umpiring and bad rules cost Pakistan this game.. @ICC should change this rule .. if the ball is hitting the stump that’s out whether umpire gave out or not out doesn’t matter.. otherwise what is the use of technology??? @TheRealPCB vs #SouthAfrica #worldcup,” on his X platform.
In the backdrop of this debate, the cricket fraternity witnessed an edge-of-the-seat clash between Pakistan and South Africa on October 27 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. South Africa narrowly secured a win by just one wicket.
Choosing to bat first, Pakistan set a challenging score of 270 in 46.4 overs, thanks to commendable innings by Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel. South Africa's response was marked by hurdles, but they managed to chase down the target in 47.2 overs, with Aiden Markram's outstanding 91-run contribution being a highlight.
This defeat for Pakistan was unprecedented, marking their fourth consecutive loss in World Cup history. Meanwhile, South Africa's triumph catapulted them to the top of the points table, pushing India to the second spot. Pakistan, now in the sixth position, is gearing up to face Bangladesh on October 31, while South Africa is set to battle New Zealand on November 1.
