Indian cricket team ended their 11-year-long ICC trophy drought after beating South Africa by 7 runs in the Finals of the just-concluded T20 World Cup 2024 which was being played at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, on June 29 (Saturday). Indian captain and legendary player Rohit Sharma is still in disbelief of living that historic moment and revealed that he feels like it still has not happened.
Rohit Sharma on the feeling of winning T20 World Cup title
The Indian captain revealed that the feeling of winning the prestigious T20 World Cup title has still not sunk in yet. With this, he has also become the first non-Windies player to win two T20 World Cups. He is also one of the only two players to be part of all editions of this mega tournament right from the inaugural one.
"Yeah, the feeling is surreal. I would still say it hasn't sunk in totally. It's been a great moment right from when the game got over till now. It feels like a dream we still feel that it hasn't happened. Although it has happened but it feels like it hasn't happened. That's the emotion, that's the meaning that you have," Rohit expressed in a video posted by BCCI.
He also talked about the moment when he ate the soil from the Barbados pitch. He revealed the reason behind it and said that he wanted to keep the soil of the place where his dreams came true close to his heart.
"Nothing was scripted. I was feeling the moment. When I went to the pitch because that pitch gave us this (WC trophy). We played on that particular pitch and we won the game. That particular ground as well, I will remember that ground forever in my life and that pitch as well. I wanted to have a piece of that pitch with me. Those moments are very very special. The place where all our dreams came true, I wanted something of it. So, that was the feeling behind it," said Rohit.
Rohit announces retirement from T20Is
Virat Kohli announced his retirement from T20Is right after winning the POTM award for his match-winning innings against South Africa. However, Rohit made that announcement in the post-match presentation. He brought his T20I career to an end at the highest of highs. He is also the leading run-scorer of T20Is and following him in the list is Virat Kohli.
"That was my last game as well. Honestly, I have enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. There is no better time to say goodbye to this format. I have loved every moment of it. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted to do," Rohit said in the post-match press conference.
