The low-scoring T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 encounter between South Africa and West Indies was interrupted due to rain at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua. Just before rain played spoilsport, Andre Russell had dismissed South African opener Quinton de Kock. South Africa were 15/2 after two overs in the run chase of 136.
South Africa’s revised target
After strong showers dampened the spirits of spectators in Antigua backing the home team, South Africa were given a revised target. Three overs were lost due to the rain interruption. The Proteas need to chase down 123 in 17 overs. They need 108 more runs from 14 overs with eight wickets in hand. In this scenario, only two bowlers can bowl a maximum of four overs and three can bowl three each.
What if rain interrupts again?
If rain interrupts again and only a five over game is possible. South Africa will have a target of 48 runs. If one over is lost, the next target will be 118. If two overs are lost, the revised target with be 113.
What if rain causes washout?
If rain returns before five overs are bowled in the run chase, West Indies will get knocked out of the tournament. South Africa will advance to the semifinals as they will have five points from three games. They will finish on the top of Group 2 with two wins and one no result at the Super 8 stage.
What Shamsi said during innings break?
Left-arm chinaman bowler Tabraiz Shamsi who got the crucial wickets of Kyle Mayers, Roston Chase and Sherfane Rutherford was happy with the bowling effort to restrict West Indies for 135/8.
“Really nice to be out on the park when there's a full crowd in. Really nice to be able to contribute today. He was fantastic (Markram's captaincy). That's the beauty of our bowling attack. There's no set pattern. The way he marshalled the guys was brilliant. It's a pretty decent surface to be honest. There's a little bit of turn but nothing excessive. The ball is coming onto the bat nicely and I suppose in the second innings hopefully there's a bit of dew,” he told the broadcasters.
