ndian cricket will go through a transition phase after the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2021. India’s T20I captain Virat Kohli will leave the captaincy role in this format whereas Ravi Shastri’s tenure as head coach will come to an end. In relation to being the new head coach, former Indian captain Rahul Dravid is considered as top candidate for the post.

There have been reports that Ganguly may have convinced Dravid for the top job but there is no official announcement regarding it. Former Indian captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly speaking at Aajtak's 'Salaam Cricket' conclave in Dubai said that Dravid came here to talk about the future of the National Cricket Academy (NDA).

“There is no confirmation yet. I keep reading in the papers but there is no confirmation as such. The process has to be followed. If he wants to apply, he can. He is still the NCA coach. He came to meet us in Dubai for NCA, on how to take NCA ahead. I believe NCA has a big role in Indian cricket because it is responsible for making the next-level players,” Ganguly said.

“We had spoken to him about that (being the coach) in the past and he wasn’t interested. Even now I feel the same. He has asked for the time. We will see what happens in the future. Big players like Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Tendulkar, Laxman, Sehwag, Kumble, how many times do you get to see such players in the country? It is important to have their utilisation in any country. Thus, it is necessary that these players should remain in touch with Indian cricket,” the BCCI chief added.

India's all-time great Dravid has been heading the U-19 and India A team for the past six years. Under his guidance players like Rishabh Pant, Avesh Khan, Prithvi Shaw, Hanuma Vihari and Shubhman Gill have come to the fore and are playing in the national team. If he becomes the head coach of the Indian team then the team will start its preparations for the next T20 and 50-over World Cup in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
