After the controversial Asia Cup tournament came to an end recently, a fresh controversy has erupted in the ongoing Women's ODI World Cup. It all happened during the league stage clash between Bangladesh and Pakistan on Thursday. However, it wasn't an on-field incident and rather had to do with the commentary box.
Former Pakistan captain Sana Mir was heard uttering the words 'Azad Kashmir' on air while talking about batter Natalia Pervaiz. She was heard saying that Pervaiz hails from the Azad Kashmir region and this left many Indian fans agitated. This is due to the fact that Azad Kashmir generally refers to the area that is a subject of dispute between India and Pakistan.
This controversy comes at a time when tensions between the two cricket teams are at an all-time high. Recently, Pakistan players Sahibzada Farhan and Haris Rauf were seen making provocative gestures during the side's Asia Cup clash against India in the Super 4. While Farhan did a gun celebration after reaching his half-century, Rauf was seen signalling '6-0' to the Indian fans. This referred to Pakistan's baseless claim of downing six of India's fighter jets during Operation Sindoor. Also, both the teams didn't shake hands in any of the three matches that they played against each other in the tournament.
Sana played in hundreds of matches for Pakistan
Meanwhile, Sana not only captained the Pakistan team, but also had a fairly long international career as the side's premier spinner. She played in a total of 120 ODIs and 106 T20Is, picking up 151 and 89 wickets respectively. It remains to be seen if ICC takes any action against her for the bizarre statement that she made during the Pakistan-Bangladesh match.
