Team India started their Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 campaign with a strong 59-run win against Sri Lanka (via DLS method) in Guwahati. Despite early trouble, India made a comeback led by the all-round brilliance of Deepti Sharma and a crucial knock by Amanjot Kaur, to start the tournament on a high.
India in Early Trouble, but Amanjot & Deepti Rescue the Innings
Batting first in a rain-affected match that was reduced to 47 overs per side, India found themselves in a spot of bother at 124 for 6. The top and middle order collapsed under pressure from Sri Lankan bowlers, especially Inoka Ranaweera, who picked up 4 wickets.
Just when things looked bleak, Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma stepped up. The duo stitched together a match-saving 103-run stand, steadying the innings with maturity and confidence. Amanjot played a blazing 57 runs off 56-ball knock, including 5 fours and a six, her maiden World Cup half-century. Deepti, calm as ever, scored 53 off 53 balls, reaching her 16th ODI fifty.
Their partnership not only revived the innings but helped India reach a competitive total of 269 for 8 in 47 overs. A final flourish from Sneh Rana, who smashed 28 off just 15 balls*, ensured India crossed the 250 mark.
Sri Lanka Start Well but Falter in Chase
In reply, Sri Lanka had a steady start, with Chamari Athapaththu leading from the front. Alongside Hasini Perera, she built a promising opening stand before Kranti Goud broke through. Chamari top-scored for her side with a quickfire 43, including 4 fours and 3 sixes.
But India’s bowlers began to take control once again. Deepti Sharma returned with the ball and made an immediate impact, dismissing Chamari and later picking up two more crucial wickets. Her spell completely shifted the momentum in India’s favour.
The Sri Lankan middle order couldn’t handle the pressure. Despite a few starts from Harshitha (29), Vishmi (11), and Nilakshika Silva (35), the chase fizzled out. Sneh Rana chipped in with two important wickets, and the rest of the Indian bowlers kept things tight.
In the end, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 211, falling short by 59 runs (DLS). The victory was built on calm under pressure, excellent partnerships, and a strong all-round effort from Deepti Sharma, who was rightly the star of the match. India will now face Pakistan in their second ODI World Cup clash which will take place on October 02 in Colombo.
