Team India lost the second consecutive World Test Championship (WTC) final on English soil. After a massive 209-run loss to Pat Cummins-led Australia, former cricketers have criticised Rohit Sharma’s decision to bowl first, leaving out Ravichandran Ashwin and batters’ application in both innings as poor shot selection led to collapses. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Roger Binny is of similar opinion as he felt that India lost the game on Day 1 itself but he wants the team to look ahead.
“We lost the game on the first day itself. The big partnership that Australia put on was what really turned the tables in this game. Otherwise, the game was even. If you take away that partnership, the game was totally even,” Binny told ANI.
“We have something bigger coming up in the future so we have to keep our spirits up and make sure that we do well in the World Cup and it’s at home. So that is important,” he added.
Binny is optimistic as India will host the ODI World Cup after a big gap of 12 years. The last time India hosted ODI World Cup, they brought the trophy home after a long wait of 28 years under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
On Day 5 of WTC final at Kennington Oval, London, India needed 280 runs with seven wickets in hand to create history. But Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane got out chasing deliveries outside off away from their body. The lower order and tailenders failed to put up a fight as India got all out for 234, losing seven wickets for 55 runs.
After the disheartening loss, Rohit Sharma said in the post-match press conference that WTC final should not be a one-off Test but a three-Test series.
“I would love that. But is there a time? That's the big question. But honestly, in a big event like this, you need to have fair opportunities to both the teams. You know, a three-match series would be nice, but it's about finding that window where it can be fit in. But I would love to have - in an event like this, you work hard for two years and then you have only one shot at it. So, it's not really - you cannot get into that momentum that you need in Test cricket, you know,” Rohit said.
"Test cricket is all about finding that rhythm, finding that momentum as well. So, I think, yeah if in the next cycle, if it is possible, three match series would be ideal," he added.
