Former India cricketer expressed his excitement about the beginning of a new era in Indian ODI cricket under Shubman Gill, who was appointed Rohit Sharma's sucessor to lead India in the upcoming three-match series against Australia. Rohit captained India during their last ODI assignment in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where the Men in Blue defeated New Zealand to win the title.
Uthappa for Shubman Gill ODI captaincy
Uthappa reckons that Gill's captaincy will start a new phase in India's ODI side and he is curious the see the kind of approach and brand of cricket Gill brings in, especially with Rohit continuing to open alongside him at the top.
“It will be interesting to see what kind of approach he takes to ODI cricket right now. What are the norms or standards that Shubman Gill sets for the ODI side. What brand of cricket do they wanna play, and I think there’ll be a slight adjustment there, especially with Rohit at the top with Shubman," Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.
Gill's ODI captaincy is an opportunity for the young skipper, Robin Uthappa
The former India cricketer believes that Gill's ODI captaincy is an opportunity for the young skipper to showcase his style in the format, expressing excitement and anticipation for India’s upcoming series against Australia.
"It also gives Shubman to kind of get into that space and kind of find himself, as far as the captain is concerned of this format as well. So, pretty interesting to see, I am looking forward to that Australia series,” he added.
Gill has already been appointed as India's Test captain, where he impressed everyone in the England tour. In his debut Test series as a captain, he scored 754 runs and the series ended in a 2-2 draw.
The three-match ODI series between India and Australia is scheduled to start on October 19. After finishing the ODI series, Team India will play a five-match T20I series where Gill will be Suryakumar Yadav's deputy.
