Indian captain Rohit Sharma has arrived in Perth on Day 3 of the first Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 opener. Rohit boarded the flight to Australia on November 23 from Mumbai.
Rohit did not travel with the squad as he stayed back with wife Ritika Sajdeh to welcome his second child, a baby boy. The child was born on November 15 but Rohit decided to spend time with his family and communicated it to team management.
In the absence of Rohit, pace-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is leading India in the first Test. After India were bowled out for 150, Bumrah led from the front and bagged a five-wicket haul. Australia were bundled out for 104 and India took a 46-run lead.
Rohit's replacement as opener, KL Rahul answered his critics with a 77-run knock in the second innings. He shared a record-breaking 201-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal who scored 161 runs. In the first innings, Rahul was unlucky as he was given out by the third umpire despite inconclusive evidence.
Rohit will join Team India in Perth where they are dominating the proceedings. India are set to post a huge total on the board in the third innings for the Pat Cummins-led side. The tourists are in good position to win the Test considering cracks opening up on the pitch leading to lack of bounce on odd deliveries.
The Indian captain may look to prepare for the second Test of the series by playing a two-day warm-up game against Prime Ministers XI at Manuka Oval, Canberra starting November 30. The day-night Test will be played at Adelaide Oval starting December 6. The Prime Minister's XI includes pacer Scott Boland who wasn't picked for the first Test in Perth.
