Captaining the side in the absence of an injured Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli did not hold back when the Australian crowd tried to rile him up during the first session on Day 3 of the fifth Test at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). During the 11th over of the innings, Kohli responded by showing his empty pockets. He imitated what Australian opener Cameron Bancroft did during the tour of South Africa when three players including Steve Smith and David Warner were found guilty of ball-tampering.
The SCG crowd seemed to love Kohli's response in the slip cordon. The imitation act also brought a smile to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant's face.
In the previous over, Prasidh Krishna got rid of Smith as Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully took an excellent diving catch. However, Kohli did not take a dig at Smith. During ODI World Cup 2019, Smith was heckled by the crowd over the infamous sandpaper incident when he asked them to clap for him instead.
Krishna keeps India in hunt
After a wayward start from the bowlers, Krishna helped India stay in the game. He drew first blood with the wicket of young opener Sam Konstas in the fourth over of the innings. He scored 22 runs from 17 balls. A few overs later, Marnus Labuschagne poked at a delivery outside off and was caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal at third slip. Smith was dismissed by Prasidh as well as he was troubled by the bounce. Both Labuschagne and Smith returned to the pavillion after single-digit scores. Australia were 71/3 after 13 overs. They need 91 more runs to win the Test and win the series. Krishna bowled six overs and conceded 27 runs with the new ball.
Kohli faced fine in MCG Test
Earlier, Kohli faced a 20 per cent match fee fine and was handed one demerit point by the match referee for bumping into teenager Konstas.
