India head coach Gautam Gambhir has lauded Shubman Gill and the team for their thrilling win over England at The Oval to level the five-Test series 2-2. On his Test captaincy debut, Gill scored 754 runs on the tour, second-most by an Indian batter in a Test series.
"I think Gill has done a fabulous job, that’s all I can say and he will keep doing well for Indian cricket," Gambhir told reporters on his arrival from England on August 5.
Gambhir led the wild celebrations of the coaching staff as Mohammed Siraj dismissed Gus Atkinson to end the series on a high. The head coach wants all the players to get the credit for the performances.
"We are really happy. I think the boys deserve every bit of it because they way the fought since the last two months in all the five Test matches. They deserve all the plaudits," he said.
While Gill was the highest run-scorer, Siraj took most wickets (23) in the series. But, not just Siraj, Gambhir feels there were plenty of individual performers throughout the series.
"Look he (Siraj) has been really brilliant, not only him the entire team has performed brilliantly and it is really difficult for me to mention one name.
"These guys have, be it Shubman, be it Siraj, Jaddu, Washi, Jaiswal, I can stand here and talk for the next 20 mins about the individual performances. I think the boys have been brilliant in the last two months," the former Indian opener said.
Gambhir’s next assignment
Gambhir’s next task will be the T20 Asia Cup 2025 which is scheduled to start on September 9 in the UAE. India don’t have a preparatory series for the tournament as the Bangladesh tour has been postponed.
Surya has a hit, will Siraj get his place in T20I squad?
Meanwhile, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has hit the nets after recovering from sports hernia surgery. It will be interesting to see if Siraj gets his place back in the T20I squad. He hasn’t played limited-overs cricket for India since the Sri Lanka tour last year. He wasn’t part of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad either.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Siraj claimed 16 wickets from 15 games for Gill-led Gujarat Titans (GT) at an average of 32.93. His economy rate in the season was 9.24 runs per over.
