Following the conclusion of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a total of two Player of the Series awards were given, one each for India and England. On one hand, Bremdon McCullum decided to name Shubman Gill as his pick while on the other hand, Gautam Gambhir chose Harry Brook as the winner of the award. Gambhir's pick was quite a questionable one as the likes of Joe Root and Ben Stokes arguably had more of an impact on the series than Brook.
Now, Brook has himself come out and has voiced his disagreement with Gambhir's decision. The England batter feels that Root was a better candidate than him to win the award. While Brook finished the series with 481 runs, Root was the side's top-scorer with 537 runs so it made more sense for the latter to be named as England's Player of the Series.
"I didn't score as many runs as Rooty (Joe Root), so I probably think he should be Man of the Series or Man of the Summer. He has been for many years," Brook said on BBC Test Match Special.
Both Brook and Root tonked tons in 5th Test
In the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Brook and Root both smashed centuries to take England quite close to the 374-run target. However, the former lost his wicket for 111 and that triggered a batting collapse. The hosts were 301/4 after Brook's wicket fell, but ended up losing their remaining wickets in the space of just 66 runs to eventually fall 6 runs short of the target. India managed to level up the series at 2-2 with this thrilling victory, which will be remembered by Indian fans for many years to come.
After the match, Brook stated that he wanted to put India under more pressure and that is why continued batting with an aggressive mindset despite the target being close. However, this is where the 26-year-old ended up making a huge mistake and lost his wicket while trying to unnecessarily play a big shot.
"At the time, I was very confident. If I'd got a quick 30 in the next couple of overs, then the game is done. That was my thought process. I always try and take the game on and put them under pressure... I wish I was there at the end," Brook stated.
"I've played all right," he said. "I could have won that game yesterday, which is devastating, but I'm just happy to contribute to as many games as I can," he added.
Meanwhile, England will now be shifting their focus to the white-ball formats as they are set to host South Africa for a three-match ODI series that is set to begin from September 2. They will then be clashing against the Proteas in a three-match T20I series which will commence from September 10.
