Former India head coach Ravi Shastri reckons Washington Sundar has what it takes to become a long-term all-rounder in the Test arena. Sundar made his Test debut on Australian soil when Shastri was head coach. He played a crucial role in India's historic Gabba win. Impressed with his recent performances, Shastri said that he realised Sundar is set for big things the day he saw him in action.
"I always loved Washington. When I saw him on day one, I said he's the man. And he can be a genuine all-rounder for many, many years for India," Shastri said on 'The ICC Review'.
So far Sundar has played 11 Tests. Shastri believes that the 25-year-old should have played more Tests for India.
"He again is just 25 years of age. I think he should have played a lot more Test cricket. Can be lethal in India on tracks where the ball is turning, as New Zealand found out when they played against India. He out-bowled some of the senior spinners. He bowled that well and he can bat," he said.
Shastri believes in Sundar's all-round ability
While Sundar has 30 wickets from 11 Tests, he averages nearly 39 with bat, including four half-centuries. Shastri sees Sundar getting a promotion in batting lineup soon.
"He's a naturally talented batsman. He's no number 8. He can go at 6 very soon in the batting lineup," he predicted.
In the previous game, Sundar took four wickets for 22 runs in 12.1 overs, helping visitors bowl out England for 192. The former India all-rounder considers him an asset in overseas conditions.
"And once he gains confidence, I think he'll get better and better because even overseas he's got the drift, he's got the pace, he's got the strength in his fingers and the fitness. You know, do both long spells and do the controlling job when needed," he added.
Sundar due for big knock
Sundar has got starts but he is yet to score a half-century with bat. Included in the side ahead of left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, Sundar has scored 77 runs from four innings in the ongoing series. His best with bat, the 42-run knock came at Edgbaston, Birmingham, when he shared a 134-run partnership with captain Shubman Gill.
