India ended up losing their series opener against Ireland

India’s current tour of Ireland got off to a shocking start in the opening game of their two-match T20I series. A youthful Irish side led by Lorcan Tucker scripted history on Friday by secure their first-ever win over India across any cricket format.

Shreyas Iyer’s squad was left reeling after suffering a 34-run defeat. While opener Abhishek Sharma provided a bright spot with a blistering 49 off just 20 balls, the rest of the Indian batting lineup collapsed under the pressure of the chase. A flurry of poor dismissals during the middle overs ultimately saw the Men in Blue bundled out for a disappointing 148 runs.

Abhishek reveals how Sooryavanshi is being handled by Team India

Following the match, a frustrated Abhishek Sharma did not hold back, criticizing the Indian batting unit's performance during the post-match press conference. The left-hander also shed light on how the team management is handling 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who earned a senior call-up on the back of sensational performances in the 2026 IPL, the U-19 World Cup, and domestic List A cricket.

"He asks questions, so I feel he has that in himself, where he wants to learn a lot of things, and obviously it's a dream for him too," Abhishek said after the match.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's debut gets delayed

At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi earned his first call-up to the Indian national team following a historic campaign with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. The prodigy took the cricketing world by storm, becoming the youngest player ever to win both the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player award after amassing an incredible 776 runs. His stock rose even higher after a jaw-dropping 29-ball 94 in the List A Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka A, making his inclusion in the national squad highly anticipated.

Despite the immense hype, Sooryavanshi was left out of the playing XI for the series opener against Ireland, sparking widespread debate. The team management opted to stick with their proven, T20 World Cup-winning opening duo of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. While his international debut was put on hold on Friday, cricket fans likely won't have to wait long, as the young phenom is heavily tipped to earn his first cap in Sunday's second and final T20I.

Following the opening match, Abhishek Sharma shared insights into how the dressing room is helping the teenager adapt to the senior setup. Sharma emphasized that the entire squad and coaching staff view it as their responsibility to ensure Sooryavanshi feels at home. Describing the 15-year-old as incredibly eager and constantly inquisitive, Sharma noted that the rookie's hunger to learn and constant questions prove he has the drive to succeed at the highest level.
