Abhishek Sharma's fifty during India vs Ireland first T20I won't be counted

A massive umpiring blunder left Abhishek Sharma stranded at 49

Shreyas Iyer’s tenure as India's T20I captain got off to a disastrous start as the reigning T20 World Cup champions suffered a shocking 34-run defeat to Ireland at the Civil Service Club ground in Belfast. But amidst all the hullabaloo around India's heartbreaking defeat, a big umpiring blunder denied Abhishek Sharma a well deserved fifty, which many thought he completed during the match as the scoreboard suggest the same.

Why Abhishek Sharma's fifty wasn't counted in IND vs IRE 1st T20I?

Chasing 183 for victory in the opening game of the two-match series, the visitors collapsed to 148 all out in 18.5 overs. The result marked a historic milestone for the hosts, registering Ireland's first-ever victory over India across any format of the game.

Amidst the team's batting collapse, world No. 1 T20I batter Abhishek provided the lone spark, though his night ended in bizarre heartbreak. The dynamic opener believed he had blazed his way to a fifth T20I half-century in just 19 balls. However, after he was caught in the eighth over off Liam McCarthy, a post-dismissal review by the umpires revealed that one of his runs had actually been a leg-bye. The deduction left him stranded at a bitter 49 off 20 deliveries, denying him a record-extending fifth sub-20-ball T20I fifty—a feat unmatched by any full-member nation batter.

Anyways Abhishek Sharma bags a milestone

Despite missing out on the milestone, the 25-year-old star opener still etched his name into the record books during his top-scoring effort. Abhishek officially became the fastest Indian batter to reach 1,000 career runs in T20I cricket, crossing the milestone in just 528 balls. In doing so, he shattered the previous national record held by former T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, who reached the landmark in 573 balls, and Shivam Dube, who required 648 balls.

On the national leaderboard for the quickest to 1,000 T20I runs, Sanju Samson and Hardik Pandya jointly occupy the second spot, having both reached the milestone in exactly 679 balls. Abhishek Sharma vastly outpaced them in the series opener, and he was also on the verge of securing a historic global feat. If he had officially crossed the half-century mark on Friday, his 19-ball effort would have been celebrated as the third-fastest T20I fifty ever smashed against Ireland.

Only two batsmen in T20I history have taken the Irish bowling attack apart faster. The record belongs to Dutch batter Stephan Myburgh, who hammered a 17-ball half-century during the 2014 T20 World Cup in Sylhet, while Bangladesh’s Litton Das holds the second spot with his fierce 18-ball fifty in Chattogram back in 2023.

Now all eyes will be on the second T20I against Ireland, where India will have a chance to redeem themselves in the two-match series, which then can only level, not win
