The incident occurred in the 29th over of Sri Lanka's innings, with Sundar bowling for India. A video clip of the exchange quickly gained popularity on social media. In the clip, Rohit can be heard playfully scolding Sundar for questioning whether a ball had edged the bat.

The incident unfolded when Washington Sundar bowled to Sri Lankan batsman Dunith Wellalage and appealed for LBW. The umpire turned down the appeal, prompting Sundar to seek advice from Rohit Sharma. Unsure of the decision, Rohit consulted with wicketkeeper KL Rahul, who indicated that he hadn't heard a clear edge. Rohit, maintaining his humorous demeanor, playfully reprimanded Sundar, saying:

 

"What? You tell me. Mere ko kya dekh raha hai. Sab kya main karu tere liye?" (What? You tell me. What am I supposed to see? Should I do everything for you?)

The playful banter between Rohit Sharma and Washington Sundar injected a dose of fun into the match, highlighting Rohit's ability to create a relaxed atmosphere on the field. Sri Lanka's batting order struggled against India's disciplined bowling, but half-centuries from Pathum Nissanka (56) and Dunith Wellalage (67 not out) helped them recover to post a respectable total of 230 for eight in the first ODI. Nissanka displayed concentration, while Wellalage's confidence was evident as they navigated a challenging pitch. Despite their contributions, several other Sri Lankan batsmen failed to capitalize on the start provided by the duo.

 

In the end the match ended in a tie as India were folded for 230 runs.
