The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025 clash between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Saint Lucia Kings turned out to be a nail-biter. The home team led by Imran Tahir won as Dwaine Pretorius once again hit a last-ball six to bring a successful end to the run chase. Warriors' Pretorius hit Kings' captain David Wiese for a six to win the game by two wickets. However, what followed led to a heated exchange on the field.
After hitting the ball over long-on for a six, Wiese spread his arms. Then, he took his tongue out as if he was taunting Wiese, a former South African international as well. After making the gesture, he stared as Wiese as he started walking off. Kings’ captain wasn’t pleased and had a few words to say to Wiese.
Eventually, Pretorius walked off the field with his teammate Gudakesh Motie. Meanwhile, Wiese was distraught as he could not defend 12 runs in the last over. Later, during customary handshake, he had a word with Warriors’ captain Imran Tahir, another South African. He seemed to complain about Tahir’s actions after the last-ball six.
Sampson hits big in run chase
In the run chase, Wiese walked in to bat in the 18th over when Shai Hope departed. He remained unbeaten for 12 runs from seven balls in Warriors' two-run win that helped them qualify for the playoffs. Earlier, it was Quentin Sampson who laid the foundation of the run chase. Chasing a target of 187, he hit seven fours and five sixes in his 39-bhall 76. He shared a 66-run partnership for the second wicket with Hope who scored 44 runs from 34 balls. Warriors suffered a collapse but Pretorius held his nerve to win the game similar to what he pulled off in the last season as well.
Chase’s big knock, Pretorius strikes twice
In the 29th game of CPL 2025, Wiese won the toss and opted to bat first. The openers departed early but Roston Chase's unbeaten 55-ball 90 and Ackeem Auguste's 30-ball 50 took them to 185/4. Chase hit six fours and five sixes in his knock. Pretorius was impressive with the ball as well, taking two wickets for 36 runs.
What Wiese said after the game?
“Disappointed to take it to the end and not being to execute of the last ball. We all want to win the game for the team and unfortunately it wasn't to be for us today. We need to adjust as a bowling unit before the playoff games. We gonna have to reflect and come back strong in the next couple of days,” Wiese said in the post-match presentation.
Warriors want the top-two spot
Despite the defeat, Saint Lucia Kings are at the top of the points table with 12 points and a better net run rate (NRR) than Trinbago Knight Riders. Meanwhile, Guyana Amazon Warriors will have a chance to enter the top two when they take on Barbados Royals at home on September 14. Royals are already out of the playoffs race whereas Warriors are placed fourth on the points table with five wins from nine games. A win will ensure a top two finish for the Warriors.
“We want to finish top 2 and we need to improve and I hope we gonna carry this momentum going forward,” Tahir said after the thrilling win.
