Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal went on a boundary-hitting spree when they walked out to bat in the first session of Day 4 of second Test. Dropped catches did not make a difference as Rohit and Jaiswal did not take their step off the accelerator and created Test cricket history. The Indian openers’ quickfire knocks helped India become the fastest to reach 100 runs in a Test innings.

India reached the three figures from just 12.2 overs against West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain. The broke the previous record that was created in 2001. Sanath Jayasuriya's rampant knock helped Sri Lanka reach 100 runs against Bangladesh in just 13.2 overs at Colombo in 2001.

Jaiswal made a statement in the first over itself as he smashed Kemar Roach for a six and a four. Rohit followed suit and hit Roach for a six in the third over. He targetted Alzarri Joseph as well. In the 10th over, the 36-year-old reached his half-century from just 35 balls. This is the fastest half-century of Rohit’s Test career.

Rohit departed in the 12th over when India's score was 98. He lost his wicket to Joseph. The opener's 44-ball 57 was studded with five fours and three sixes. After Rohit’s wicket, an early lunch was taken due to rain.

After the game restarted as Shubman Gill got off the mark with a couple of runs off Jomel Warrican, India created history in Test cricket.

In the same over, Jaiswal lost his wicket. He went for a slog sweep but got caught by the wicketkeeper Joshua de Silva. The southpaw scored 38 runs from 30 deliveries including four fours and a six.

Another record for Rohit

Rohit achieved another milestone during his 57-run knock. He broke former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene’s record of most consecutive double-digit scores in Test cricket. Rohit now has 30 consecutive double-digit scores.

Kishan’s rare feat

Also, Ishan Kishan entered exclusive list of Indian wicketkeeper-batters as soon as he walked out to bat at no.4 ahead of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. Kishan became the sixth Indian wicketkeeper-batter to bat at no.4 in Tests for India. The last wicketkeeper-batter to do it was Nayan Mongia against Australia in 2001.
