The curtain closed on a thrilling IPL 2024 as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched their third title after crushing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 26. This 17th edition of the tournament lived up to its reputation, with fierce battles between bat and ball. Every team brought their A-game, resulting in a season of shattered records. Notably, the IPL witnessed the highest T20 chase ever and the highest score ever recorded in the league itself. The addition of the ‘impact player’ rule further spiced up the dynamic of the 74-match tournament. With scores consistently surpassing 200, teams were left guessing if they had posted a winning total.
KKR reign supreme after dominating playoffs
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious in IPL 2024, capping off an impressive run with a win in the finals. They secured the top spot in the league stage with 9 wins from 14 matches. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) followed closely behind with 8 wins, pushing Rajasthan Royals (RR) to third place on Net Run Rate (NRR) despite having the same number of wins. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), on a hot streak with 6 consecutive wins, managed to grab the fourth and final playoff spot.
The playoffs saw KKR continue their dominance, defeating SRH by 8 wickets in Qualifier 1 to secure a direct ticket to the finals. In the Eliminator, RCB fell short against RR by 4 wickets. RR's journey ended in Qualifier 2 where they were defeated by SRH by 36 runs, setting up a KKR vs SRH final.
KKR clinch third title with dominant performance
Kolkata Knight Riders displayed a clinical performance in the IPL 2024 final, dismantling the Sunrisers Hyderabad by a convincing 8 wickets and securing their third championship title under Shreyas Iyer's leadership. Electing to bowl first, KKR unleashed a bowling masterclass, restricting SRH to a meager 113 runs. Andre Russell emerged as the wrecker-in-chief with three wickets, while Mitchell Starc and Harshit Rana chipped in with two wickets each. Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakravarty, and Sunil Narine also contributed with a wicket apiece. Chasing a modest target, KKR openers Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz put on a dominant display. Despite losing Narine early, Venkatesh Iyer (52*) took center stage, blasting a quickfire half-century. Gurbaz (39) provided valuable support as KKR comfortably chased down the target in just 11 overs, leaving SRH with no chance of a comeback.
