The race for the Purple Cap among the bowlers is getting intense as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 progresses. Mumbai Indians (MI) speedster Jasprit Bumrah after taking a five-wicket haul against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) dethroned Rajasthan Royals (RR) leggie Yuzvendra Chahal to get the purple cap.

Bumrah took five wickets and conceded just 21 runs from his quota of four overs in a high-scoring encounter at the Wankhede Stadium. He has 10 wickets from five games and a better average than Chahal who has same number of wickets from five games. Bumrah also has the best economy rate among the top five wicket-takers in the tournament. MI’s pace-bowling spearhead has bowled at an economy rate of 5.95 runs per over. Notably, Chahal is the only spinner who is in the top five in the race for the purple cap.

Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) Bangladesh recruit Mustafizur Rahman who has 9 wickets has occupied the third spot. Punjab Kings (PBKS) left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is in the fourth position with eight wickets. He entered the race when he grabbed four wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 9.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans (GT) pacer Mohit Sharma is in the fifth position. On April 10, against the RR he took one wicket and re-entered the list of top five wicket-takers in the race for the purple cap. Last season, he took 27 wickets from 14 matches.

LSG's Yash Thakur who took the first five-wicket haul of the season against Gujarat Titans (GT) may become one of the frontrunners in purple cap race. Thakur has six wickets from three games. He stood up to the task when LSG's sensational fast bowler Mayank Yadav got injured. Mayank has six wickets from three games and is unlikely to take part in the clash against DC.
