Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant for the second consecutive match has been fined for maintaining a slow over rate in their fourth Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 game. DC conceded 272 runs after Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bat first in Vizag.
This was DC's second offense of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct which relates to minimum over rate offences. Pant faced an INR 24 lakh fine whereas the rest of the members of the Playing XI and the impact player will face an INR 6 lakh fine each or 25 per cent of their match fee, whichever is lesser.
If Pant maintains a slow over rate in DC’s next against Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 7, he will face a 100 per cent fine or a one-match ban, depending on the match referee.
DC lost the game by a huge margin of 106 runs as apart from Pant and Tristan Stubbs’ half-centuries, no other batter could make an impact. This is their second-biggest defeat in IPL history in terms of runs. Their net run rate (NRR) took a massive hit and they slipped to the ninth position with three losses from four games.
DC bowlers embarrass Ponting
DC's mentor Ricky Ponting was left embarrassed by the bowlers' performance, especially for the number of extras they conceded.
"It's pretty hard to assess right now. I mean I was almost embarrassed with our first half of the game today," said Ponting at the post-match press conference. "To concede that many runs...we bowled 17 wides and it took us two hours to bowl our overs as well, so we were two overs behind again, which means the guys bowling last two overs only get to bowl with four fieldsmen outside the circle.
"Lot of things happened in this game that were unacceptable and a lot of things we will talk as a group tonight that we have to fix immediately to go forward in the competition. There will be some good open discussions in the changing room for sure."
