Things were going south for the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since the inception of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Losing their first four matches on the trot was the last thing CSK fans would have ever expected. But this happened. This wasn't all, the yellow army also went through a massive transition in the leadership role with the appointment of Ravindra Jadeja as CSK's new skipper right before the IPL 2022 kicked off. But matching Dhoni's legacy was a task for Jadeja when he stepped up to spearhead the side. But as luck would have it, Jadeja failed to bind CSK intact and eventually succumbed to the stress of captaincy and handed over the baton back to Dhoni.
Since then CSK have showed some sign of improvement and they still have an outside chance to qualify for the IPL play-offs, however, they need their luck to strongly favour them in that pursuit. On Sunday, CSK thumped Delhi Capitals by 91 runs to prove their point as to why they are considered the champions of the game.
CSK are sitting eighth on the IPL points table with mere four wins in a total of 11 matches.
While many are ruling them out of the contention for a place in the top four, the four-time champions can still get to 14 points provided they win their last three matches. Moreover, the MS Dhoni-led side will need a few other results to go their way out of the remaining matches in the league stage. The permutations and combinations are little too many for their liking but funny things have happened in the IPL before and no team can be ruled out until the last moment.
One thing is for sure that CSK will only get to the fourth position if they end up winning their last three matches and the net run-rate will also come into the picture. So not only they will have to win all the four games, CSK will also have to make sure that they win them by a big margin.
