Once again, third umpiring in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) is under the scanner after Devdutt Padikkal was adjudged not out despite a clear spike on the ultra edge. Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper was not happy with the decision and argued with the on-field umpire as he was shocked why the decision was not in his team’s favour.

Padikkal got a major reprieve on the third ball of the eighth over of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) innings. The RCB opener tried to play reverse sweep to counter Ravi Bishnoi’s googlies but could not succeed. There was a huge appeal but the on-field umpire said not out. Even after referral and a clear spike, the decision was not reversed by third umpire Krishnamachari Srinivasan. PBKS were not only denied a wicket but they lost a review as well.

This is not the first time third umpire has made a controversial call. Earlier, former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper had lambasted third umpire Anil Dandekar for not giving Rahul out at a crucial juncture of the game. Former England cricketer Graeme Swann too was not happy with the decision.

In the PBKS vs KKR clash, Rahul was not given out in the penultimate over of the innings. Rahul Tripathi took his catch but Dandekar felt that the fielder did not have his fingers underneath the ball.

However, the third umpire’s decision in the RCB vs PBKS clash did not have a negative impact on Rahul’s team as he could add only five runs to his team. The 21-year-old scored 40 runs from 38 deliveries and got RCB off to a steady start with a 68-run partnership for the first wicket.
