Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik's international career was filled with multiple setbacks. Despite making his India debut way before MS Dhoni, Karthik had to struggle a lot to secure a permanent spot in the Indian team. Even after multiple setbacks, Karthik made several comebacks into the side with great performances.
Dinesh Karthik recalls Virat Kohli's unwavering support
One of the comebacks was made by Karthik during India's campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy. While remembering the return of 2017, Karthik recalled Virat Kohli's unprecedented support which he values a lot even today.

Karthik who played his last ODI in 2014, was searching for another chance to make a return in the Indian setup. Initially, Manish Pandey was named in the squad for Champions Trophy, before he picked up a side strain injury which led to his exclusion from the squad. As an outcome, Virat recommended Dinesh Karthik who eventually got selected.
Remembering the instance, Karthik revealed how Virat backed him with words of affirmation and trusting his ability to contribute to India's success.
“Virat called me and said, ‘You’re doing really well.’ And then on the physiotherapy table with Basu sir, he said, ‘Dinesh is playing really well, he should be a part of the Champions Trophy squad,’" recalled DK at a podcast with Nipin Marya.
"An endorsement like that, from a person like him, means a lot," added Karthik.
While continuing, Dinesh revealed how Virat announced his comeback in front of the media and that he wants him to be a part of the World Cup squad as well.
“He told the world through the media that what I was doing was special and that I should be in the World Cup team. For someone like Virat to acknowledge my journey that meant everything," said Karthik.
Dinesh Karthik's decorated IPL career
Currently, Dinesh Karthik serves as the batting coach and mentor for the Bengaluru-based franchise in IPL. He stepped away from the sport after the IPL 2024 season came to an end. He was one of the most reliable finishers with brilliant technique and ability to time the ball really well.
