'The villain for me is Mitch Marsh': Former Indian opener wanted DC all-rounder to retire like R Ashwin

Returning from an injury suffered during Australia's tour of Pakistan, Mitchell Marsh was in the Delhi Capitals (DC) team that lost to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 16 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Mumbai on Saturday (April 16). The Australian all-rounder failed to score a single boundary as he took 24 balls to make 14 runs before returning to the dugout by Wanindu Hasaranga.

Batting first, RCB posted 189 runs on the board courtesy of a 34-ball 55 by Glen Maxwell, and Dinesh Karthik's 34-ball 66. In reply, the side led by Rishabh Pant, started the run chase well, adding 50 runs for the first wicket. But Prithvi Shaw’s dismissal saw the team’s run rate increase, which built the pressure on the batters, who then went on to play rash shots and lose their wickets.

After the loss, one player who was condemned for his performance was Marsh, who notched a meagre strike rate of 58.33 during his innings. Following his horror performance, former India opening batter Krishnamachari Srikkanth slammed Marsh, calling him a villain and saying that he should have retired himself out like Ravichandran Ashwin did against the Lucknow Super Giants.

"Come on Mitch, you should have thought out or just said retired out. That's the best way out, like what Ashwin did, because you had a deep batting order and by the time the run rate had climbed up to 13-14 runs per over, Rishabh Pant tried desperately, but the villain for me is Mitch Marsh," the 1983 World Cup-winning member told Crichunt Youtube channel.

It was a disappointing debut in DC colours for the T20 World Cup winner, who was also named Player of the Match in the T20 World Cup final played between Australia and New Zealand in Dubai last year. His heroics did not go unnoticed and the former U-19 World Cup-winning captain was signed by DC for Rs 6.50 crore. But against LSG, Marsh played 11 dot balls and was one of the reasons for Delhi’s third loss of the season.

"Frankly speaking, they were off to a good start and David Warner was very brilliant and, because of the pressure created by Marsh, Warner got out and Pant had to go after every ball and he also got out," Srikkanth added.

With just two wins, DC are currently eighth on the league table. The Rishabh Pant-led side will now face the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 20 (Wednesday).
