After securing first win in IPL 2026 against Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 11 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium by 23 runs, Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has faced a big setback for breaching the code of conduct.

The CSK skipper was slapped with a fine of Rs 12 lakhs after his team maintained a slow over rate in IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals. The IPL confirmed the offense in a media advisory, stating that as per the Article 2.22 of Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate violations, Gaikwad has been penalised.
"As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gaikwad was fined INR 12 lakhs," said the IPL in a media advisory.
As per the guidelines, the 29-year-old batter could receive 1 demerit point if the fine exceeds Rs 25 lakh in the upcoming games. The BCCI imposes fines of over Rs 25 lakh on captains from the third slow-over rate offense onwards in a single season.
Chennai Super Kings' power-packed performance vs DC
Batting first, Sanju Samson (115 off 56) and Ayush Mhatre (56 off 39) powered Chennai Super Kings to reach 212/2 against Delhi Capitals. In the second innings, Jamie Overton (4/18) and Anshul Kamboj (3/35) shone with the bowl as DC crumbled to 189/10, losing the game by 23 runs.
Ruturaj Gaikwad's struggle continues in IPL 2026
In the IPL 2026 season, Ruturaj Gaikwad has struggled with the bat amid captaincy pressure, amassing only 56 runs in four matches at an average of 14.00 and a poor strike rate of 103.70. These statistics do not display Ruturaj's actual potential, CSK will look for some winning contribution from their skipper in the upcoming games.
Next challenge for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026
After claiming their first win, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side will lock horns with Ajinkya Rahane's Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday, April 14. The game will be played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. It will be interesting to see if CSK can repeat the same attacking mindset against the Kolkata-based franchise.
