James Foster is former England's wicketkeeper-batter

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former England wicketkeeper-batter James Foster to their coaching staff for the IPL 2026 season. Serving under head coach Stephen Fleming, Foster will take on the role of fielding coach as the franchise seeks a complete turnaround following their disappointing bottom-place finish last year.

James Foster becomes CSK's fielding coach

The 45-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the CSK dugout, having represented England in seven Tests, 11 ODIs, and five T20Is during his international career between 2001 and 2009. He is expected to officially join the squad and begin his new coaching duties later this month.

"We have been looking for a fielding coach. I am hopeful he will join us," CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

James Foster’s appointment as CSK fielding coach adds another layer of global expertise to their support staff. Beyond his previous stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders, Foster has built an extensive resume across the T20 circuit, working with franchises such as the Desert Vipers in the UAE, the Northern Superchargers in the UK, and Peshawar Zalmi in Pakistan. He joins an elite group under head coach Stephen Fleming, which includes Mike Hussey (batting), Eric Simons (bowling), and Sridharan Sriram (assistant bowling), along with long-time team manager Russell Radhakrishnan.

CSK kick off IPL 2026 preparation

As IPL 2026 preparations ramp up, CSK has already launched a pre-season camp at their high-performance center. Most of the Indian domestic contingent is currently in attendance, including the legendary MS Dhoni and promising youngster Ayush Mhatre. While superstars like Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube are currently tied up with national duties in the T20 World Cup, they are expected to join the squad later this month alongside Shreyas Gopal, who recently finished his Ranji Trophy commitments.

Determined to erase the memory of their last-place finish in 2025, CSK have executed what many consider the biggest trade in IPL history. In a massive tactical shift, the five-time champions traded veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals to secure Sanju Samson. Samson enter the CSK dugout with his stock at an all-time high, having just propelled India into the T20 World Cup semi-finals with a masterful, unbeaten 97* against the West Indies.

Meanwhile, IPL 2026 is all set to get underway from March 28 with final scheduled for 31
