Sai Sudharsan's hundred trumps KL Rahul's century
Sai Sudharsan anchored the innings with a well-paced century (108), while Gujarat captain Shubman Gill played a masterful supporting role, scoring an unbeaten 93 off just 53 deliveries. The pair exhibited remarkable composure throughout their innings, carefully selecting their moments to attack and exploiting favorable bowling matchups. Sudharsan began his innings by targeting Axar Patel, who surprisingly bowled himself during the powerplay overs.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill took the initiative against Delhi Capitals' pace bowlers early on, which proved crucial in allowing both batsmen to find their rhythm and settle at the crease. Once they were well-established, no Delhi bowler was spared, as the duo unleashed aggressive strokes against the likes of T Natarajan, who conceded 49 runs in his three overs without taking a wicket, and Dushmantha Chameera, who went for 22 runs in his two overs.
This victory once again highlighted the effective game plan orchestrated by Gujarat Titans' coach Ashish Nehra this season. The strategy revolves around the top three batsmen taking responsibility and aiming to secure victory in every match. This approach stands in stark contrast to many other teams in the league who have adopted a more aggressive, high-risk approach from the outset, hoping to leverage their deep batting lineups later in the innings.
Delhi Capitals' batting performance in their innings was largely dictated by KL Rahul's response to the bowling. Continuing their trend of shuffling the opening pair, for the seventh time in twelve games, Delhi opted for the combination of KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis at the top of the order.
Unfortunately for Delhi, du Plessis, who has had an injury-plagued season, struggled to find his rhythm and was dismissed for a slow 5 off 10 deliveries in the fourth over. His difficulties at the crease directly impacted the team's momentum during the powerplay, as Delhi managed to score only 45 runs for the loss of one wicket in the initial six overs.
Du Plessis's dismissal brought young Abishek Porel to the crease, but he couldn't provide an immediate spark. Abishek and Rahul adopted a cautious approach in the initial phase before gradually shifting gears after the powerplay. The duo forged a crucial 90-run partnership off 52 balls for the third wicket before Abishek was caught by Jos Buttler after edging a short and wide delivery.
KL Rahul played a masterful innings, anchoring the Delhi innings with shots of exceptional quality. His scoring rate fluctuated as he navigated some quality bowling spells and strategically timed his attacking bursts, particularly considering Delhi's tendency to lose wickets in quick succession.
This pattern of ebb and flow continued with Axar Patel, who contributed a quickfire 25 off 16 balls. However, his dismissal in the 17th over stalled Delhi's progress at a critical juncture, just as they were looking to accelerate the scoring rate. Following two relatively quiet overs in the 17th and 18th, KL Rahul joined forces with Tristan Stubbs to unleash a late onslaught, smashing 30 runs in the final two overs. This surge helped Delhi reach a total of 199 runs, which appeared to be a par score on a pitch that offered some assistance to both grip and turn bowlers.
Rahul launched a spectacular assault against Prasidh Krishna and Mohammad Siraj in the final overs, showcasing a blend of class and desperation. One of Rahul's pick-up shots off Prasidh Krishna drew immediate comparisons to Virat Kohli's iconic six against Haris Rauf in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
KL Rahul reached his century off 60 balls and added a further 12 runs in the subsequent five deliveries, finishing his innings unbeaten on a magnificent 112 off 65 balls. His aggressive batting was well supported by Tristan Stubbs, who once again played a breezy cameo of 21 not out off 10 balls, further suggesting that he deserves a higher position in the batting order.
GT will next face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 22 while DC will take on Mumbai Indians on May 21.
