Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) face a herculean task in their race for the IPL 2026 playoffs as they prepare to take on Delhi Capitals (DC) in their final group stage match of IPL 2026 on May 24. Currently sitting on 13 points from 13 matches, KKR's postseason hopes were further complicated by the Punjab Kings' victory over the Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday, which did not work in Kolkata's favor.
KKR's qualification scenario for IPL 2026 playoffs
To keep their qualification hopes alive, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side must first rely on external results and hope that the Mumbai Indians defeat the Rajasthan Royals, a outcome that would eliminate the Riyan Parag-led Rajasthan squad. If that scenario unfolds, KKR must then secure a massive victory over Delhi to decisively boost their Net Run Rate (NRR).
To leapfrog their competitors, KKR needs to win by at least 77 runs if they bat first. If they are chasing, they will need to overhaul the target in 12.1 overs or fewer—though they can extend that window to 12.4 overs if they finish the match with a boundary six when scores are tied. Achieving this specific margin would leave KKR and Punjab Kings level on points, but would allow Kolkata to edge through to the Playoffs on a superior NRR.
When Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals square off, both teams will be looking for nothing less than a victory to cap off the league stage. However, given the complex net run rate permutations and external results beyond their immediate control, both squads are likely to focus on executing their game plans and finishing the season on a strong note rather than getting consumed by shifting qualification scenarios.

Injury woes for KKR
A primary hurdle for KKR this season has been their severely disrupted bowling unit, which faced early-season injuries and player unavailability. Key pacers Mustafizur Rahman, Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, and Matheesha Pathirana all missed crucial games due to various fitness issues, while their marquee signing, Cameron Green, was unable to bowl during the initial stages of the tournament as he eased back from an injury of his own. Adding to the injury woes, KKR's star pacer Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out of the IPL 2026 due to hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Luvnith Sisodia has been called in as Pathirana's replacement.
