Delhi Capitals (DC) has appointed the high-profile Matthew Mott as their new head coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. In a strategic shift leading up to the IPL, DC have opted for a blend of international and local coaching expertise. This decision follows their departure from Australian legend Ricky Ponting after the previous season, during which they initially leaned towards a predominantly local coaching team.
Matthew Mott becomes Delhi Capitals assistant coach for IPL 2025
However, after Ponting's move to the Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals have reintroduced an international element to their backroom staff. They've now secured the services of Matthew Mott as the new assistant coach, bringing his extensive coaching experience to the franchise. Mott, formerly the coach of the England team, will now collaborate with Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao within the Delhi Capitals' setup. Matthew Mott also guided Australia women's team to World Cup title in 2020 and 2022 as their head coach.
This restructuring comes after the Capitals had previously appointed former Indian cricketers Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao as their head coach and Director of Cricket, respectively, in preparation for the IPL 2025 mega auction last year.
DC are yet to announce their new captain for IPL 2025 after the departure of Rishabh Pant, who was hired by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a historic deal of Rs 27 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Pant thus became the most expensive player in the history of IPL. DC will begin their IPL 2025's campaign with a clash against Pant-led LSG on March 22.
