MS Dhoni has missed the first four IPL 2026 matches due to calf injury

CSK lost three out of four matches in the ongoing season

Former Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) star Subramaniam Badrinath has sparked intrigue regarding the status of MS Dhoni, claiming that even the franchise management remains in the dark about his return date for IPL 2026 season. Although the five-time champions have already navigated four matches, the legendary former India captain has yet to make an appearance. The 44-year-old is currently sidelined by a calf injury, keeping him away from the pitch as he approaches his 45th birthday later this year.

He has started batting: S Badrinath on MS Dhoni's fitness

Badrinath shared that Dhoni is undergoing rigorous assessment as he manages his recovery behind the scenes. According to the former batter, Dhoni has intentionally chosen not to travel with the squad to ensure that the spotlight remains on the active players rather than his own rehabilitation. By staying away from the dugout for the time being, the veteran wicketkeeper is reportedly focused on his fitness while avoiding any unnecessary distractions for the team during their campaign. However, Badrinath ended up disclosing that Dhoni has already started batting practice.

"It's a million-dollar question on whether MS Dhoni will return against KKR. He has started batting, and the team management themselves aren't sure about his return, which Sridharan Sriram told me. He is being assessed day by day on his likely return. Dhoni is probably not coming to the ground to ensure the attention doesn't fall on him,” Badrinath said on his YouTube channel.

Leading up to the 2026 IPL season, CSK fans were prepared for a brief wait after the franchise announced that S Dhoni would miss the opening two weeks of competition. However, that timeline has now passed with no official update on when the legendary wicketkeeper might return to the fold. This prolonged absence has fueled speculation, leaving a void in the leadership and keeping the Yellow Army on edge as they await news of their talisman’s recovery.

The struggle to adapt without Dhoni was evident early on, as the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side stumbled through three consecutive defeats to start their campaign. The team finally found their footing in their fourth outing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, securing a crucial 23-run victory over the Delhi Capitals. Now, with their first win under their belt, the 2023 champions are looking to build a streak as they prepare for a high-stakes encounter against KKR April 14.
