Avesh Khan turned the match on its head with his last over heroics to snatch a dramatic 2-run win for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their IPL 2025 clash at the Sawai Man Singh stadium in Jaipur on April 19. Despite a fine half-century from Yashasvi Jaiswal and an impactful debut by teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi for the home side, Rajasthan Royals fell just short.
Avesh Khan showcased nerves of steel in the final over, successfully defending nine runs to secure win for LSG. He conceded only six runs in that decisive over, adding two valuable points to his franchise's tally. The opening partnership between Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal played a significant role in keeping Rajasthan Royals in contention during their chase of 181 runs. The two openers forged a strong start, taking the hosts to 85 runs in 8.4 overs.
Making his IPL debut at just 14 years old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi impressed with a quickfire 34 runs off 20 balls, which included three towering sixes. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his stellar form, scoring a well-compiled 74 runs off 52 balls, studded with five boundaries and four sixes. Rajasthan's stand-in captain, Riyan Parag, also contributed a useful 39 runs off 26 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes. Ultimately, Avesh Khan's three wickets for 37 runs proved decisive for the visiting team.
Not sure what we did wrong: Riyan Parag
Meanwhile, RR's stand-in skipper Riyan Parag was left clueless after his team's painful defeat against LSG. In the post-match presentation Parag admitted he is finding it hard to process the emotions. He ended up taking all the blame for RR's heartbreaking loss.
"Feeling a little hard to process the emotions, not sure what we did wrong. We were in the game till the 18-19th over. I probably should have finished it in the 19th over, I blame myself. We just have to put one game together collectively for 40 overs, only then can we win. We did really well (with the ball), the last over was unfortunate, thought that we would stop them for 165-170. Sandy (Sandeep Sharma) bhai is trusted, he’s only had one bad game. Samad batted really well. We should’ve chased that down. Today was perfect, no complaints about the wicket. We were right in it, just a few balls can cost you an IPL game," Parag said in the post-match presentation.
RR will next face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy stadium on April 24, while LSG will lock horns with Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 22 at the Ekana cricket stadium.
