Gujarat Titans (GT) have acquired the services of their former player, Australia's retired wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade as an assistant coach with less than a fortnight to go into Indian Premier League (IPL).
Wade has played for GT in IPL 2022 and 2024. He was in the Australian side which won their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021 edition.
"Champion. Fighter. Now our Assistant Coach! Welcome back to the GT Dugout, Matthew Wade!," the franchise wrote on X.
Wade will join the coaching staff led by head coach Ashish Nehra. Others in the coaching staff are batting coach Parthiv Patel and assistant coaches Aashish Kapoor and Narender Negi.
How GT's last season went
In the previous season after Hardik Pandya left GT, they finished eighth under Gill's captaincy with five wins from 14 games. However, they were unlucky as two of their games were washed out due to rain.
GT's star buys at the mega auction
This season, GT have roped in the services of star players Jos Buttler, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Sira, Glenn Phillips and others. Their most expensive buy at the auction was Buttler at Rs 15.75 crore. Their most expensive Indian buy was Siraj at Rs 12.25 crore.
Wade's record for GT
Wade joined GT in IPL 2022 and scored 157 runs from 10 innings at an average of 15.70. His highest score for the franchise was 35. In the previous edition, he got just two games and registered a single-digit score in the only opportunity he got to bat.
However, the southpaw is a legend for Hobart Hurricanes. He retired from international cricket earlier this year. He was part of Australia's T20 World Cup 2024 squad that failed to make it to the semifinal.
