SRH condemned CSK to 10-run defeat in their IPL 2026 clash

SRH successfully defended their total of 194

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pull off a handsome 10-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Rajiv Gandhi International to record their third win in the IPL 2026. CSK suffered a batting collapse and eventually were left stranded at 184/8 while chasing a 195-run target.

SRH keep CSK in check with 10-run win

With this win SRH have climbed to fourth place in the IPL 2026 points table, bringing their season record to three wins and three losses. Meanwhile, CSK currently sit in seventh place, struggling with a record of two wins and four losses.

Chasing 195, CSK rode on valuable contributions from Ayush Mhatre (30 off 13), Matthew Short (34 off 30), and Sarfaraz Khan (25 off 16). The run chase got off to a turbulent start; after Sanju Samson fell to Nitish Kumar Reddy in the second over, Mhatre aggressively took on Praful Hinge to boost the scoring. However, a fine catch by Klaasen ended Mhatre’s stay, and the quick dismissal of skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad left CSK in a precarious position at 66/3 by the end of the powerplay.

The middle overs were characterized by a steady 46-run partnership between Short and Sarfaraz, which helped CSK reach 111/3 at the halfway mark. The momentum shifted decisively against the visitors shortly after, as Eshan claimed the scalp of Sarfaraz and Shivang Kumar removed Dewald Brevis for a duck. Although Short and Shivam Dube attempted to stabilize, they struggled to accelerate, and Short eventually fell for 34, followed by Dube, who was dismissed by Sakib Hussain.

With CSK needing 30 runs from the final two overs, SRH’s bowlers held their nerve. Despite a massive six from Anshul Kamboj that narrowed the equation to 18 runs needed off the final over, Praful Hinge delivered a disciplined closing spell. SRH’s bowling unit, led by Eshan (3/29) and Nitish (2/31), supported by Sakib (1/32) and Shivang (1/18)—effectively stifled the chase, ultimately leaving CSK 10 runs short of their target.

Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen's solid fifties in SRH's win

Earlier, SRH batting lineup suffered a collapse, failing to capitalise on Abhishek Sharma's explosive early performance. Despite Sharma's rollicking half-century, a disciplined bowling effort from Chennai Super Kings pacers Jamie Overton and Anshul Kamboj restricted the hosts to a below-par total of 194 for 9.

Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad opted to bowl first, a decision that appeared to backfire early as Abhishek Sharma blazed his way to another 15-ball half-century. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary dismissed Travis Head and skipper Ishan Kishan with consecutive deliveries to close the powerplay. This sudden turnaround transformed the Sunrisers' score from a dominant 75 for no loss in 5.4 overs to 75 for 2 by the end of the sixth, handing CSK the opening they desperately needed.

Following the powerplay, the Sunrisers found the going tough, with Heinrich Klaasen providing the only meaningful resistance. Klaasen anchored the innings with a resilient 59 off 39 balls, pushing the team's total toward the 200-run mark. Had the Sunrisers not lost four wickets in a span of just 4.5 overs, they could easily have pushed their total into the 225–230 range. By the halfway stage, the score sat at 112 for 4, forcing the team to focus on stabilization rather than aggressive counter-attacking.

A key turning point in the contest came courtesy of Sanju Samson’s tactical awareness; he successfully appealed for a review to dismiss Abhishek Sharma off a short ball from Jamie Overton. For the remainder of the innings, the combination of Overton’s hard lengths and Noor Ahmed's deception through the air stifled the SRH batters. As others like Nitish Reddy, Aniket Verma, and Salil Arora struggled to find their rhythm, the burden of scoring fell heavily on Klaasen.

Jamie Overton (3/37) and Anshul Kamboj (3/22) proved to be the wreckers-in-chief during the middle and death overs, effectively keeping the home team under a tight leash. Kamboj, in particular, showcased his mastery of fast, wide yorkers from around the wicket, a delivery that ultimately accounted for Klaasen. Supported by the lanky Gurjapneet Singh, who bowled 12 dot balls, the CSK bowling unit ensured the Sunrisers were quieted in the final phase, allowing only 40 runs in the last five overs.
