The proposed ownership transition of Rajasthan Royals has run into uncertainty, with the deal now at risk of escalating into a legal dispute. Despite a formal announcement, fresh developments suggest the process may not be as settled as initially projected.

A consortium led by Arizona-based businessman Kal Somani, which was reportedly close to acquiring the franchise, is now considering legal action following the collapse of negotiations.

US-backed group prepares legal response

Sources close to the Somani-led group have indicated that legal proceedings are being actively explored. The consortium, which had backing from prominent American investors including associates of Walmart and the Detroit Lions ownership, believes the deal breakdown raises serious concerns.

"We have had calls this morning with legal and PR in the USA. We are deciding on our PR. A legal letter will be sent today," said a source connected to the group (via Cricbuzz).

There are also indications that a formal communication could be directed to the BCCI as part of the next steps.

Dispute over delays and deal structure

Conflicting claims have emerged regarding the collapse of the agreement. One key issue revolves around the exclusivity period granted to the Somani group to complete the payment, which was reportedly not met.

However, sources from the US side have contested that narrative, stating that a significant portion of documentation—around 90 percent—remained pending from the franchise’s end. "They slow-dragged it," the source said, suggesting delays from RR management impacted the process.

"They continued negotiations in good faith until the last second. With the Walton and Hamp families behind him, money was never an issue."

Differences over leadership role add tension

Another point of contention appears to be the future role of existing ownership. The Somani-led group reportedly had reservations about current lead owner Manoj Badale continuing in the new structure.

In contrast, the final arrangement with other investors retained Badale in a key capacity, as confirmed in an official statement, which noted that he would continue supporting the franchise with his experience and institutional knowledge.

Legal battle looms as uncertainty persists

The consortium is now deliberating whether to make the dispute public, with legal proceedings potentially on the horizon.

"We will discuss it with our group if we are going to go publicly on the matter since litigation will be involved," the source added, highlighting unresolved concerns over financial clarity and pending legal queries.

As the situation unfolds, RR’s ownership transition remains uncertain, with the possibility of a legal showdown casting a shadow over the high-profile deal.
