Fans of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were left excited during the franchise’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) after MS Dhoni was spotted walking onto the field in the iconic yellow jersey. With the legendary wicketkeeper-batter yet to feature this season due to injury concerns, many supporters initially believed Dhoni was preparing for a surprise return at Chepauk.
However, the real reason behind Dhoni’s appearance had nothing to do with a comeback to competitive action.
Why Dhoni was seen wearing CSK jersey during the SRH clash
Dhoni was present on the field for a special team photoshoot organised by CSK during their final home game of the IPL 2026 season. Since it was Chennai’s last match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium this year, the franchise arranged an official squad photograph with all players and support staff.
The 44-year-old joined his teammates wearing the official CSK jersey, marking the first time this season that fans got to see him in franchise colours inside the stadium. Videos and images of MS Dhoni walking onto the field quickly went viral across social media platforms, with supporters celebrating the moment despite his continued absence from the playing XI.
Why MS Dhoni is still unavailable for Chennai Super Kings
Dhoni has remained sidelined throughout IPL 2026 because of multiple injury setbacks. The former India captain was initially ruled out with a hamstring strain earlier in the season, and his recovery suffered another blow after he reportedly picked up a thumb injury.
Ahead of the SRH clash, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed at the toss that MS Dhoni was still not fit enough to participate in the match. Although fans were hopeful of seeing him feature in Chennai’s final home fixture, the franchise management decided against risking the veteran’s fitness.

Dhoni’s chances of playing later in the season also appear slim, with CSK already struggling in the playoff race and the veteran continuing his rehabilitation away from match action.
