Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya won the toss at the Wankhede Stadium and opted to bowl first against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in what is a crucial encounter for the Rajasthan side in terms of qualifying for the playoffs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
While the MI have already been eliminated from the playoff race, RR entered the game needing a victory to secure the final remaining playoff spot.
However, a major surprise came during the toss as Pandya revealed that star pacer Jasprit Bumrah would not feature in the clash.
Hardik Pandya reveals why Jasprit Bumrah is missing from MI XI
Speaking at the toss, Pandya confirmed that Bumrah has been rested for the match.
"We will bowl first. It looks like a good track and it tends to get better in the evening."
The MI skipper also reflected on the significance of the annual Reliance Foundation game at Wankhede Stadium.
"It's a very special day, overall, the Reliance Foundation has helped and impacted 29 lakh people. It’s a privilege to be part of this."
Pandya highlighted how special the atmosphere is whenever Mumbai Indians play this fixture.
"Every year we come here, we know this specific game will have the loudest and best atmosphere."
He further added:
"It’s been a tough season for us, but we want to finish on a high."
The biggest update, however, came when Pandya revealed Bumrah’s absence.
"Jassi (Jasprit Bumrah) is resting and Deepak Chahar is in."
Interestingly, while Pandya mentioned Deepak Chahar during the toss, it was actually Shardul Thakur who replaced Bumrah in the starting XI, with Chahar retaining his place from the previous game.
Bumrah’s omission came as a massive surprise considering the senior pacer has been one of MI’s standout performers this season.
RR eye playoff qualification despite MI already being eliminated
Although the result of the game would not affect Mumbai Indians’ playoff fate, the match remains extremely important for the Rajasthan Royals.
RR entered the contest knowing that a victory would officially seal their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs.
With Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Gujarat Titans (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) already securing the top three spots, only one playoff berth remained available.
RR, therefore, approached the clash as a virtual knockout encounter.
Meanwhile, MI would be aiming to end their disappointing IPL 2026 campaign on a positive note in front of their home crowd at Wankhede Stadium.
