Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) fast bowling coach James Hopes made an honest admission about the team’s playoff situation after their defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.

PBKS suffered a 23-run defeat against the defending champions, marking their sixth consecutive loss of the season and leaving their playoff hopes hanging by a thread.

Speaking after the match, Hopes admitted that Punjab are now dangerously close to elimination and need to quickly address multiple issues within the side.

"Frustrating, to be honest. We are staring it in the face now. There's still hope, but we need to turn it around. We need to tidy up some areas. I felt, with the ball, we didn’t create enough opportunities early," Hopes said during the post-match press conference.

The defeat continued PBKS’ dramatic downfall after they started IPL 2026 with six consecutive wins and looked like one of the strongest teams in the competition.

However, their form has completely dipped in the second half of the season, with repeated bowling struggles and inconsistent batting performances hurting their campaign badly.

RCB outclass PBKS to become first team to qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs

After being put into bat, RCB posted a massive total of 222 runs on the board despite missing regular skipper Rajat Patidar.

Virat Kohli led the charge with 58 off 37 deliveries while Devdutt Padikkal smashed 45 off 25. Venkatesh Iyer then stole the show with a blistering 73 off just 40 balls, while Tim David’s unbeaten 28 off 12 helped RCB finish strongly.

Chasing 223, Punjab Kings suffered a disastrous start after losing Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and skipper Shreyas Iyer cheaply inside the powerplay.

Although Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis tried to keep PBKS alive in the chase with attacking knocks in the middle overs, the target eventually proved too much as the side fell short by 23 runs.

With this defeat, PBKS remain on 13 points from 13 matches and are currently placed fourth in the standings. Even if they win their final league game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), they can only reach a maximum of 15 points.

Meanwhile, RCB became the first team to officially qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs with the victory, while Punjab now need favorable results from other teams to stay alive in the qualification race.
