Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured another disappointing campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 as the five-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
This year, CSK also missed the presence of their talisman, MS Dhoni, who did not feature in a single match throughout the season due to a calf strain followed by a thumb injury. The side eventually crashed out of the playoff race after another poor run of performances.
Now, former CSK star Ravichandran Ashwin has made a bold statement regarding Dhoni potentially taking over as the head coach of the franchise in the future.
R Ashwin hints at MS Dhoni becoming CSK coach
After CSK’s disastrous IPL 2026 campaign, questions have started emerging over the future of long-time head coach Stephen Fleming.
Fleming himself recently admitted that head coaches are judged by results and hinted that the final decision regarding his future would rest with the management.
Amid the discussions, a fan on X jokingly suggested that Ashwin should not become the next CSK head coach because he might reveal the playing XI and strategies on his YouTube channel before matches.
Responding to the fan in his trademark witty style, Ashwin wrote:
"Absolutely agree with you! I will announce 11 and make sure the opposition know the bowling and batting plans as well."
Ashwin further added:
"In fact, the above will ensure that the anti corruption unit will take me to task & will also ensure my own failure. Do you even know the rules? Where exactly are you coming from?"
However, it was his final statement that grabbed the attention of fans across social media.
Ashwin hinted that CSK may not even need to search for a new coach as long as Dhoni remains associated with the franchise.
"Adding on: When Msd is there why are you searching for anyone at all?"
The statement immediately sparked speculation among fans regarding Dhoni potentially stepping into a coaching or mentoring role for CSK in the upcoming seasons.
CSK struggle throughout IPL 2026 campaign
CSK never truly found momentum during IPL 2026 and struggled for consistency across departments.
Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the side managed to win only six matches while losing eight games in the 14 league-stage fixtures.

The franchise also suffered defeats in their final three league games, officially ending their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.
With major questions now surrounding the squad structure, coaching setup, and Dhoni’s long-term involvement with the franchise, the upcoming off-season could prove to be a crucial period for the Chennai-based side.
