Karun Nair's 89-run knock went in vain as Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 13 runs to register their second win of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
While chasing 206 runs, DC failed to get a good start as their opener Jake Fraser-McGurk, departed on the first ball of the over. After his wicket, Karun Nair joined Abishek Porel, and the duo stitched a 199-run partnership before Naman Dhir picked Porel's wicket on the 11th over. Nair's domination continued from the other end. Nair's inning ended after Santner picked his wicket in the 12th over. After Nair's wicket, DC failed to get momentum as they lost three wickets in three overs.
Earlier, after opting to bowl, DC spin duo Kuldeep Yadav and young leg spinner Vipraj Nigam picked quick wickets before Tilak Varma smashed a half-century that helped MI to 205 for 5 in 20 overs.
Tilak scored 59 off 33 balls, he was the only MI batter to manage to capitalise a good start, smashing six fours and three sixes to regain his form after failing to perform in recent outings.
On a batting-friendly Kotla pitch, Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam picked up four wickets, conceding 64 runs in their eight overs that helped the Capitals to get the momentum.
Former MI skipper Rohit Sharma again failed to perform as he dismissed after scoring 18 off 12 balls. The star batter missed while trying to go for a slog sweep over the cow-corner. He now has 56 runs from five innings.
Rohit's opening partner Ryan Rickleton scored 41 off 25 balls but the veteran Kuldeep picked 2/23 in 4 overs. Star batter Suryakumar Yadav scored 40 off 27 balls who was looking set, Kuldeep decreased the pace and bowled the googly as the bat face turned for India's T20 skipper. The result was a simple catch in the deep.
Tilak and Naman then added 62 runs in 5.3 overs to take the team past the 200-run mark.
