In a massive boost for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), their star pacer Matheesha Pathirana has been declared fit to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) recently confirmed that the young speedster is ready to join the squad, providing much-needed relief for a KKR bowling attack that has been hampered by recent injury concerns.
KKR's Matheesha Pathirana recovers from injury ahead of IPL 2026
According to SLC secretary Bandula Dissanayake, Pathirana has successfully completed his rehabilitation program and has received full medical clearance to participate in the tournament. While the board has given the green light, the KKR management plans to conduct its own internal assessment of his match-readiness before officially integrating him into the starting lineup for the upcoming matches.

Pathirana’s return is particularly timely given his recent struggle with a hamstring injury, which he sustained during a T20 World Cup 2026 group-stage clash against Australia. That injury unfortunately sidelined him for the rest of the World Cup, a tournament where Sri Lanka ultimately bowed out during the Super 8 stage. His recovery now marks a crucial turning point for KKR’s tactical depth this season.
Matheesha Pathirana looks to justify Rs 18 crore price tag
While the exact date of Matheesha Pathirana’s arrival remains unconfirmed, the clock is ticking for KKR. The squad is scheduled to depart for Mumbai on March 25 to prepare for their high-stakes season opener against the Mumbai Indians on March 29. Following the away opener, KKR return to Eden Gardens for a vital three-match home stretch against Sunrisers Hyderabad (April 2), Punjab Kings (April 6), and Lucknow Super Giants (April 9).

The pressure on Pathirana to perform is peer, given KKR’s massive Rs 18 crore investment in him during the 2026 auction. This bold move was part of a broader squad overhaul by the three-time champions, who are desperate to bounce back after a disappointing eighth-place finish in the 2025 season.
Pathirana’s reputation was built during a successful four-year stint with the Chennai Super Kings, where he emerged as a T20 specialist under MS Dhoni. Since his 2022 debut, he has claimed 47 wickets in 32 matches. However, his 2025 campaign was a mixed bag; while he took 13 wickets, he struggled with control, posting a high economy rate of 10.14 and an average of 32.62.
His fitness is now the linchpin of a KKR pace attack that has faced several setbacks. The team is already without Harshit Rana, who is sidelined with a knee ligament strain, and they lost the tactical variety of Mustafizur Rahman following a BCCI directive. While Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani has been brought in as a replacement, Pathirana remains the X-factor KKR needs to lead their hunt for a fourth title.
