Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have received a major boost amidst their lacklustre performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. KKR's ace pacer Matheesha Pathirana is scheduled to join the KKR camp late on April 18. The Sri Lankan fast bowler had been sidelined due to a calf injury sustained during his country's T20 World Cup group-stage encounter against Australia. However, he has now received the necessary No-Objection Certificate from Sri Lanka Cricket, officially clearing him to participate in the tournament following his recovery.
Matheesha Pathirana to join KKR on late April 18
Currently in transit, Pathirana is expected to link up with the KKR squad, who are still winless after six matches of the ongoing season, in time for their upcoming fixture against Riyan Parag-led Rajasthan Royals, which is set to take place at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, April 19. Despite his arrival, the team is unlikely to rush him into the playing XI immediately. According to team sources, the medical staff intends to conduct a thorough assessment of his match fitness over a few training sessions before clearing him for selection.

KKR secured the services of Sri Lankan fast bowler Pathirana for Rs 18 crore after he was released by the Chennai Super Kings following a lackluster 2025 campaign. Over the course of his 32-match IPL career, Pathirana has claimed 47 wickets, with his most impressive performance occurring during CSK's 2023 championship season, where he recorded 19 wickets in just 12 appearances.
KKR's disastrous campaign
Kolkata's start to the 2026 IPL has been disastrous, leaving them languishing at the bottom of the points table and fading from playoff contention. Following a demoralizing five-wicket defeat to Gujarat Titans on April 17, the team will be under immense pressure to turn their fortunes around in their upcoming clash against the Rajasthan Royals.
