MI vs GT Today Match Results: Gujarat Titans held their nerves and eked out a nail-biting three-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2025 clash at the Wankhede stadium on May 7.
The match was halted due to rain when GT were placed at 132/6 after 18 overs while chasing a target of 156. Later the target was revised due to DLS method and GT were handed a task to score 15 more runs in just one over as the cut off time was 12:25 am IST. However, Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee combined together and plundered 15 runs off Deepak Chahar's over to seal the deal for GT
With this win GT have yet become table toppers with 16 points in 11 matches while MI dropped to fourth spot with their first defeat after recording six straight victories.
MI will next face Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 11 at Dharamsala's HPCA stadium while GT will lock horns with Delhi Capitals (DC) on the same date at the Arun Jaitley stadium.
Earlier, batting first MI managed to post a total of 155/8 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to a half-century from Will Jacks and a late cameo by Corbin Bosch. GT skipper Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field first, sending Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton to open the innings for MI. However, GT's Mohammed Siraj struck early, dismissing Rickelton on just the second ball of the innings. Will Jacks then joined Rohit in the middle.
Jacks had an early reprieve when he was dropped by Sai Sudharsan on zero. The breakthrough for GT came in the fourth over when Arshad Khan removed Rohit Sharma for 7 runs off 8 balls. Suryakumar Yadav then partnered with Jacks. MI concluded their powerplay with a score of 56/2. The pair of Jacks and Suryakumar forged a quick 50-run partnership for the third wicket in just 26 balls, taking Mumbai's score to 89/2 after 10 overs. Jacks reached his half-century in the 11th over, taking 29 deliveries to achieve the milestone. In the same over, Sai Kishore dismissed Suryakumar Yadav for 35 runs off 24 balls, an innings that included five boundaries. Tilak Varma then joined Jacks at the crease. GT continued to chip away at the wickets, with veteran spinner Rashid Khan removing the well-set Will Jacks in the 12th over for 53 runs off 35 balls, an innings studded with five fours and three sixes. MI skipper Hardik Pandya then came to the crease to partner with Tilak Varma. Following Suryakumar Yadav's dismissal, Mumbai Indians continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Sai Kishore claimed another crucial wicket, this time removing MI skipper Hardik Pandya for just 1 run. GT's bowlers maintained the pressure, with Gerald Coetzee striking in his first over to dismiss Tilak Varma for 7 runs off 7 balls. Corbin Bosch and Naman Dhir then attempted to stabilize the innings, rotating the strike and trying to build a partnership. However, their efforts were cut short when Prasidh Krishna dismissed Dhir in the 17th over for 7 runs off 10 balls. Deepak Chahar then joined Corbin Bosch in the middle. In a late surge during the final over, Corbin Bosch hit two consecutive sixes off Krishna's bowling. However, his innings was cut short as he was run out for 27 runs off 22 balls. Ultimately, Mumbai Indians concluded their innings at 155 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their full quota of 20 overs. For GT, Sai Kishore was the standout bowler, taking two wickets for 34 runs. The remaining Gujarat bowlers each contributed with one wicket.
In reply, Gujarat Titans' innings didn't begin as they would have hoped, with Sai Sudarshan departing early for just five runs. Consequently, they registered one of their lowest powerplay totals in the tournament. However, captain Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler managed to steady the ship, contributing 43 and 30 runs respectively. At a crucial juncture, rain interrupted play, and Gujarat found themselves ahead according to the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. This advantage held until Jasprit Bumrah (2/19) was reintroduced into the attack.
Bumrah's return was strategically aimed at putting pressure on Gujarat, who seemed to be gaining control of the match. The experienced pacer delivered as expected, picking up two vital wickets while conceding just 19 runs in his four-over spell. Trent Boult and Ashwini Kumar also bowled exceptionally well for Mumbai. Despite their efforts, it ultimately wasn't Mumbai's day. The visitors needed just 15 runs to secure victory in the final over via the DLS method, and the trio of Coetzee, Tewatia, and Arshad successfully chased down the target for Gujarat.
