Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif questioned the rule for the Purple Cap in the Indian Premier League. The Purple Cap is awarded to a player with the most wickets in the tournament. Kaif believes that the rule for the purple cap is unfair for bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Sunil Narine.
Kaif also cited the example that batters play cautiously against some bowlers like Bumrah, and that's the reason they won't get wickets, and the Purple Cap is awarded based on wickets, whether you have an economy of 10. Kaif took his 'X' formerly known as Twitter, to question the purple cap rule. Here is the video.
"The rule, the rule of how to purple cap, the highest wicket taker, that purple cap is given to. I am not happy with this rule because players like Jasprit Bumrah, Sunil Narine or Rashid Khan have not won a purple cap yet in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL). Because players bat carefully when player Bumrah is bowling" said Mohammad Kaif on a video shared on 'X'.
Coming back to the IPL 2025, Royal Challengers Bengaluru star Josh Hazlewood is currently the Purple Cap holder with 18 wickets in 10 outings of the tournament. He bowled 36.5 overs are conceded 311 at an economy of 8.44. Gujarat Titans star Prasidh Krishna is second with 17 scalps in nine outings. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah is currently 26th in the list with nine breakthroughs in six outings at an economy of 7.50.
Jasprit Bumrah's Mumbai Indians have made a comeback in the IPL 2025, and the franchise is currently in third place in the points table with six wins in 10 outings. MI will now face the Rajasthan Royals in their upcoming clash, which is scheduled to take place on May 2 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
