In a massive blow to Punjab Kings (PBKS), their star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the remainder of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The worrisome news dropped in right after PBKS' four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings on April 30 at the Chepauk stadium which Glenn Maxwell missed. Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the season with a finger fracture.

Glenn Maxwell ruled out of IPL 2025

Glenn Maxwell had a disappointing run with the bat in the tournament, although he provided some valuable contributions with his off-spin bowling, bagging four wickets. His batting performance yielded only 48 runs across six innings, including single-digit scores in each of his last four appearances. He was acquired by the Punjab Kings for Rs 4.2 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

"Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the remainder of the season due to a finger injury. We wish him a speedy recovery," PBKS's statement read.

This marks the second injury-related setback for PBKS, following the earlier loss of fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, who sustained what was described as a 'serious injury' earlier in the month and was subsequently ruled out of the remainder of the tournament. While PBKS are yet to name a replacement for Ferguson, head coach Ricky Ponting has indicated that this matter will be addressed in the near future.

Ponting has confirmed the injury to Maxwell and stated that the team will promptly begin scouting for suitable replacements. Ponting suggested that players such as Azmatullah Omarzai, Aaron Hardie, and Xavier Bartlett could be potential candidates for selection, with considerations based on the prevailing playing conditions, particularly in Dharamsala. PBKS is scheduled to play their next two matches in Dharamsala, against Lucknow Super Giants on May 4 and Delhi Capitals on May 8.

"We will be signing some replacements at some stage. We've got until our 12th game, so we have a couple of games to go yet. With the squad we've got, we're trying to find players from within as well," Ponting said after PBKS' four-wicket win over CSK.

"So we've actually been a little bit patient. Maxi's only been a couple of days, Lockie's has been two or three weeks. And with the PSL happening at the same time, there's not a lot of high-quality replacements out there, to be honest. So we've just been patient. We're having a look around at Indian talent as well and we're looking at what roles we might be able to fill with some younger Indian players. We'll actually take a couple of guys to Dharamsala with us; a couple of guys trained with us yesterday and they will come with us to Dharamsala, We'll have a closer look at them and they might find themselves with a Punjab contract going forward. It has to be this week, it has to be before the 12th game, so stay tuned," he said.

Currently, PBKS hold the second position in the IPL 2025 points table, trailing only RCB. As of now, CSK are the sole team that has been officially eliminated from contention for the playoff spots.
